Dear Clients,
Firocoxib is an anti-inflammatory drug that is commonly used to treat chronic joint pain. The drug has been available in two forms; Previcox tablets which were designed specifically for dogs and Equioxx paste which was designed specifically for horses. Recently a tablet form of Equioxx has been approved for use in horses. This tablet form of Equioxx is less expensive than the paste form and has been designed specifically for horses. Therefore from now on we will no longer be writing prescriptions for Previcox for use in horses. If you have been using the 227mg Previcox tablets switching to the Equioxx tablets will allow for more accurate dosing of your horse by eliminating the need to break up a Previcox tablet for each dose, potentially resulting in giving too much or too little drug. If you have been using the 57mg tablets there will be no change in the number or method of giving the tablets.
Aside from the above mentioned benefits of using the Equioxx tablets we are also legally obligated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidelines to use Equioxx instead of Previcox in horses now that a tablet form is available. If we do not abide by their guidelines we could face penalties and fines from the FDA. So if your horse is currently on Previcox tablets we will not refill that prescription in the future and will instead start them on the Equioxx tablets.
